Nicola's NotesThe Virtuous Cyprian was inspired by browsing through the deeds of my parents’ Georgian house in Suffolk. I read all about copy-holding, the process by which a tenant could petition the Lord of the Manor to inherit the lease of a house. It made me realise how much of a stir it would cause in a little country village if an unexpected character – a courtesan, for instance – suddenly inherited a property there. Add the twist of twin sisters, one a bluestocking and the other an infamous cyprian, plus one very charismatic Lord of the Manor, and you have The Virtuous Cyprian… |
