Unusual Backgrounds and
Settings for Vivid, Authentic Historical Romance!
Quite a few people have asked me about the sort
of research I do for my writing so I thought I would
share the background research that I have done for some
of my books. Please
drop me a line if there are any
topics that particularly interest you.
Right from the start I have been interested in the different and
unusual in terms of historical backgrounds and settings for my books.
Whilst the intense emotional and romantic relationship will always be
the central focus of the books, they are set against a historical
background that I strive to make vivid and alive.
The way that I weave
these research elements into the books varies. In True Colours there is a
description of a Somerset Cider wassail. In The Virtuous Cyprian, Susanna
inherits her claim to the house through the ancient right of copy-holding.
Each book contains something different and historically authentic to give
true flavour to the background.
More recently my interest in unusual
backgrounds has featured more prominently in the books. I based Lord of
Scandal on research from my Masters dissertation on heroes and nineteenth
century celebrity. Unmasked has a heroine who was born a Russian serf and it
also explored the (for me!) fascinating idea of the female highwayman. The
Brides of Fortune Trilogy was inspired by the ancient manorial laws and
rights of England, some of which are still in force today!
With my
forthcoming series, unusual backgrounds again take the stage. Whisper of
Scandal is set in London and Spitsbergen, with a background of early
nineteenth century Arctic exploration. One Wicked Sin has a hero who is a
prisoner of war in England during the Napoleonic War period and Mistress By
midnight has a background very close to my own heart, that of country house
visiting! I'll be setting up special history pages for these books in the
run up to publication of the series!
